Week In Review & The Week Ahead 27 April - 3 May
If you enjoy this post, maybe you'd like to subscribe to our RSS feed so you don't miss any future posts. Thanks for visiting!
It’s been a busy and exciting week with 2 new portfolio pieces created and my digital painting tutorial being featured on PSDtuts.
Another step forward this week has been narrowing down the type of illustration work I’d like to do - Children’s books (still within the niche of wildlife illustration, but for children’s books). I really feel like I’m homing in on exactly the type of work I’d like to be doing professionally now, which gives me a clearer focus of how my portfolio should look.
Here’s a run down of how the week went: Read the rest of this entry

‘The Dragon’ - Collage Illustration
Hot off the press - just finished this portfolio piece.
The dragon is the first in a series of ‘Mythical Beast’ collage illustrations that I’m working on for the Children’s book section of my portfolio - next up, ‘The Phoenix’.
Medium: Traditional collage with a little comping and colour correction in Photoshop CS3.

The Importance Of Multiple Revenue Streams For Illustrators
If you, like me, are just starting out on the road to becoming a professional illustrator it isn’t likely that those high-paying commissions will be flying through your door immediately.
Even for established illustrators it seems that it can often be a feast or famine situation, so how do you set things up to ride out the early days or slow periods of your career when those bills still need to be paid?

Week In Review: 13th - 19th April
Another busy week on the Graphic Design front, but managed to get through most of my list - here’s a run down of how the week went…
1. Re-formulate Objective, Goals and Strategies based on the new niche direction
Nailed the Objective and Goals but still finalising the strategies. The main action that I’ll be working on in the next 2-3 weeks based on the outcome of this exercise will be beefing up my portfolio. Read the rest of this entry

13 Super Useful Resources For Aspiring Illustrators
After scouring my list of favourites and trawling my feed reader, here’s a list of 13 super useful resources to inspire, inform and advise the aspiring (and experienced) illustrator.
I hope you find them as useful as I have and if you have any additions, please do comment and share your resources with everyone.
Resources For Advice & Industry Info:
Experienced & accomplished illustrator Sterling Hundley runs a great little advice blog with info about the business and practicalities of illustration.
Illustration Mundo ‘Ask A Pro’
Aside from being a great all round resource for Illustration, the Nate Williams run site Illustration Mundo, has a great section called ‘Ask a pro’ where he poses questions to experienced illustrators who then weigh in with their answers. Lots to learn here from the experienced professionals taking part. Read the rest of this entry

Week In Review: 6th - 12th April 2009
The first thing I should mention is that you’ll probably notice that there are a number of items on my to-do list this week that appeared on last weeks list - this is for a couple of reasons:
- I had a really busy week with design work
- My consumption to output ratio is way off - meaning that I spend way too much time looking at my favourite illustrators websites rather than producing my own illustrations. This is a hard cycle to break and something I need to work harder on if I’m going to make this illustration dream a reality.
Here’s a run down of how the week went…
1. Re-formulate Objective, Goals and Strategies based on the new niche direction
Although this is one of the most important tasks on my list as it’s the foundation for all of my actions, I’ve really struggled to find time to sit down and work on it (see item 3 on the list!)
2. Experiment with Corel Painter 11 free trial download to produce new portfolio piece
The piece is underway, but it has turned into a bit of a Painter/Photoshop hybrid so far - only about 45 minutes into the piece and plan to finish it mostly in Painter - here’s a progress shot (still tons to do on it)…
