Week In Review: 13th - 19th April

Posted by Jonathan 21 April, 2009

Another busy week on the Graphic Design front, but managed to get through most of my list - here’s a run down of how the week went…

1. Re-formulate Objective, Goals and Strategies based on the new niche direction

Nailed the Objective and Goals but still finalising the strategies. The main action that I’ll be working on in the next 2-3 weeks based on the outcome of this exercise will be beefing up my portfolio.

2. Edit and narrate Photoshop digital painting tutorial Quicktime movies

After the costly mistake of purchasing software for $60 that I didn’t need, I realised I could do everything I needed using iShowU (software I already had) and Quicktime Pro (which I purchased for $30).

I didn’t realise what a great application Quicktime Pro was until I delved deeper - it allowed me to piece the screencast captures into one file, record/add the audio track and export it to the required movie format.

It was a little nerve wracking recording the tutorial narration (not used to hearing my own voice), but after a few false starts and some choice expletives, I got it in the can and sent it off to PSDtuts ready to be scheduled.

It’s very exciting to be approached by PSDtuts to create a tutorial for them, as it’s arguably the best Photoshop site on the web with 70,000 visitors per day (couldn’t ask for a better opportunity to launch this blog). I’ll add a link to the tutorial in the sidebar of zero2illo when the tutorial goes live.

3. Further style/medium experiments for animal themed ‘abc’ book

This is the one that fell by the wayside this week due to the demands of other work :(

4. Finish Polar Bear portfolio illustration using Corel Painter 11 trial download

Finished the piece but ended up using Photoshop CS3 for most of it as I didn’t have time to learn the ropes with Corel Painter 11. I still have the trial version of Painter for 12 more days though, so am still planning to put some time in to play around with it and see if it’s worth buying.

Mixed feelings about the final illo, but decided to put a line under it and call it done. This is something I struggle with and why it’s taken me so long to put together a portfolio (still a work in progress) - I want everything to be perfect, but it rarely is and so never end up with a portfolio of work to promote myself with.
