Another week full of design and website client work has flown by leaving little time for my planned self indulgent week of sketching and experimentation.
With the limited time I had this week, I really had to make it count and so focused on outreach and other more practical aspects of launching my illustration career instead (which is what I should have been planning to do all along really anyway!).
Here’s a run down of how the week went:
- Reached out to a number of experienced working illustrators that I respect and asked if they would be willing to take a look at my portfolio and provide a critique. (I’ve already had one reply back and was blown away by the amount of time that they had taken looking at my work and providing a detailed, super useful critique.)
- Finally set up the artwork for my first set of promo cards and ordered them through Moo
- Lined up a few interviews with experienced, working illustrators for this blog (one of whom was from the kind person that provided the critique) that should hopefully be ready for posting in the next week or two
- Emailed off some images along with blurb to a children’s book author who wants to interview me for a feature on their blog about aspiring children’s book illustrators.
The week ahead
This week is going to be busy with design work again but I do plan to take action based on the results of last weeks activities:
- Take stock of my portfolio based on the feedback I received in the critique and formulate a plan on what I need to replace and create to make the body of work stronger as a whole
- Draw up the questions for the illustrators that I’ll be interviewing
- Answer the questions that I’ve been sent for the ‘aspiring children’s book illustrator’ interview
Time is of the essence now and I really have to make everything count as it’s only 6.5 weeks to go until I become a first time Dad!!! (unless she arrives early and then I’ll have less time - GULP!)
