Another busy week of design work and my in-laws visiting from Italy has meant that progress has been a little slow on the illustration front, but it’s been a rewarding week with some encouraging comments on the blog from fellow aspiring illustrators (thanks guys!).
Here’s a run down of how the week went:
1. Create 2 more ‘Mythical Beast’ portfolio pieces
I only managed to create ‘The Minotaur’ piece this week but am pretty pleased with how he turned out. Am really enjoying working on this set of illustrations, especially the character design aspect.
Here’s how the ‘Mythical Beasts’ set is shaping up…
The Minotaur
The Phoenix
The Dragon
2. Tighten up my Objectives, Goals and Strategies based on honing in on the type of work I’d like to be doing professionally.
I’ve spent quite a bit of time going over this in my head but not had chance to put it down on paper - this task will definitely be taking a higher priority on the to-do list once the portfolio is ready (specifically the ‘Strategies’ part!).
3. Add the portfolio and PSDtuts graphics to the blog sidebar.
Due to an annoying bug in the code of my site, I haven’t had time to sort this out this week - I’ll get to it, but the priority has to be building my portfolio.
4. Write this weeks articles on time!!!

The Week Ahead
This week, there is only one item on the list…create new portfolio illustrations - I’m itching to start contacting Art Directors and get the promotional wheels in motion, but before I can do this I need to beef up and polish my portfolio.
Here’s a run down of my plan of attack:
- Create the final piece in my ‘Mythical Beasts’ collage set - ‘The Medusa’.
- Create 4 new wildlife pen and ink illustrations
- Go out and draw from life for one hour every day to improve my skills and also just for the fun of it…who’s with me? I’ll share some of my sketchbook pages in next weeks ‘Weekly Review’ post and if anyone else wants to join in on the daily sketching from life, post the results on your blog and let me know so I can add a link to your work in next weeks post.
I’d also love to hear from you guys for a series of posts I’m planning, spotlighting other aspiring illustrators around the world. So, if you’d like to be featured on the zero2illo site, email me with info about yourself and the illustration journey you’re on, along with links to your site or blog.
Have a great week of illustrating!

Hi Jonathan, I admire how focused you are! I’m really hoping the 12WC will help me improve in this area, I tend to get distracted easily. You’re mythical beasts are awesome! I love the colors and patterns, there is so much to look at, they really have an Eric Carle feeling to them - bravo! I too have been trying to sketch more from life, and your posting sketches sounds great. Although I will continue to do more sketching, I don’t think I’ll be able to do the blog posting thing. Between this challenge and getting ready for the SCBWI conference, plus additional family challenges, I have to cut back on posting & visiting blogs. It’s frustrating because it’s one of the things I enjoy most, but I think it’s the only way to make time for interacing with all the clubhouse members for the next few weeks.
Thanks again for all your great ideas and for hosting the 12WC!
